Kapolei man dies in motorcycle crash

A 76-year-old Kapolei man died Friday from injuries he suffered in a motorcycle crash on Aug. 29 on Kohala Mountain Road in North Kohala.

A 76-year-old Kapolei man died Friday from injuries he suffered in a motorcycle crash on Aug. 29 on Kohala Mountain Road in North Kohala.

The man was identified as Calvin B.T. Hoo.

Responding to a 12:33 p.m. call, North Kohala patrol officers determined Hoo was traveling north on Kohala Mountain Road when he ran off the right side of roadway and lost control of the motorcycle.

He was transported to North Hawaii Community Hospital and was later flown to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.

Police do not yet know if speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in this crash.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 30th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared to 15 at the same time last year.
